Ellison's Quote Reinforces the Ruminations of the JargonSpy
In Dan Woods' recent JargonSpy column titled Why Sun Wants Solaris, Woods said that with Oracle's purchase of Sun, his guess is that the "Industry in a Box" vision mentioned by Charles Phillips, Oracle's co-president, will actually become the next wave of cloud computing.
Woods went on to predict that Oracle will "follow this path with a vengeance," and that "Solaris will power Oracle's cloud offerings, but through appliances, Oracle will bring the cloud to the data center."
Woods' predictions appear to be spot-on, as Larry Ellison has confirmed in his latest press conference. According to a press release, during the press conference "Mr. Ellison said Oracle had spotted a significant gap in the market for on-demand products that Salesforce.com didn't currently address. That's the market for software hosted and stored at a data center owned by a customer but operated by a software firm, such as Oracle." "We think this is the interesting model, and that's the model Salesforce.com doesn't offer," Mr. Ellison said.
