JargonSpy Tackles Virtualization's 'Pain Points'
In this week’s JargonSpy column, Dan Woods identifies the issues IT departments face in dealing with the complexities of the virtual worlds they create. Woods explains that virtualization has “simplified the way that IT provides access to computing resources,” but that “virtualization can hit a wall because the ease of creating new virtual functionality has not been matched by a growth in the ability of IT departments to manage the complexity of the virtual world they have created.”
The column goes on to identify ways IT departments are managing these complexities and mentions products offered by VMWare that automate the management of virtual servers, but goes on to say that the long-term solution to the problems may come from a “layer of software” called the Virtual Data Center Operating System (VDC-OS).
According to Woods, the VDC-OS is “a software substrate that aggregates and manages all of the infrastructure required by an application, aiming to provide a self-managing and self-healing platform for the virtual datacenter.” The issues and solutions mentioned in the article will definitely be of interest to those of you the vital roles of IT.
